Welcome to the Alara The Label artist series in collaboration with Nostalgia and Noise, featuring Minji Kang-Watrous.
Nostalgia and Noise is a creative marketing and infrastructure company that diverges from the traditional by offering a variety of events and opportunities for creatives. They are dedicated to fostering an active community where people can experience and engage with local talent.
Alara The Label and Nostalgia and Noise are proud to collaborate on the artist series, merging fashion and art.
The first artist we are featuring is Mini Kang-Watrous - a self-taught artist born in Seoul, South Korea and based in Dallas, Texas. In this series, she is featuring Patch, Fuzz, and Ladybird, who are all accompanied by large-scale wall pieces.
Her artwork is a contemporary take on the traditional Korean medium of hanji. The traditional handmade craft is rare due to its highly complex manufacturing methods, however, Kang-Watrous uses hanji in her work to keep alive the centuries-old practice, pay homage to history and its artistic significance, and explore themes of traditional versus modern in her work.
Kang-Watrous uses the pop imagery of large-scale toys to juxtapose the application of the 1,000-year medium. Her attention to detail — from knife cuts to brush strokes — is evident in her high-quality, meticulously finished work. The simplicity of her compositions and the integration of textures create exclusive and compelling art.
To celebrate the Alara The Label artist series in collaboration with Nostalgia and Noise, we are dropping an exclusive, limited edition collection on Friday, February 16th that features 11 pieces.
We are also hosting an event at Alara The Label on Saturday, February 17th that will feature Kang-Watrous's original works of art, the collection, and more. Click here to RSVP.
Kang-Watrous's original works of art are available for viewing from Monday, February 12th to Monday, February 19th.
